- DIED. Robert Penn Warren, 84, the only American writer to win
- Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry and the first U.S. poet
- laureate; in Stratton, Vt. Warren's writings were deeply rooted in
- his native South. His 1946 novel All the King's Men, based on
- Louisiana's legendary populist Governor Huey Long, became an
- Academy Award-winning film. Warren was one of the first to win a
- MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." In 1980 he was given the Medal
- of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
